Managing a more senior role - your tips please

I've talked myself into a temporary (six-month) period acting up in my organisation. Having avoided all responsibility so far in my career (I'm 47), this will be a significant step up, involving line management and strategic/leadership elements. Slightly longer hours. It's a bit scary, to be honest. How should I approach this new role? How do I figure out what kind of leader I am? How on earth to manage my time and still be a parent occasionally? I am a Chair of Governors at a school and love it, but this feels a lot harder! Any tips or shared experience v welcome.
