Scared to leave a secure job

flummingbird · 15/02/2022 22:19

I have worked in the same company for 20 years, doing the same job. There is no room for promotion or progression of any sort, ever, and no payrises over the company wide 3 or 4% that everyone here gets.

I'd love to go somewhere else and have a change and a challenge, but I'm a single parent to a primary aged child and scared of leaving the security I currently have. What if I leave and hate my new job? What if they don't like me and don't keep me after probationary period.

Do I just need to woman up and go looking for something, or am I crazy to leave a stable job even if I'm stuck in a rut for the next 20 years.

@flummingbird

I've got a new job!!! 🙈

Crikey, I can't believe I'm saying that... I'm scared but excited. Have to confirm tomorrow then think about handing my notice in...

Congratulations! Well done for being so brave. xx

@flummingbird well done & congrats! I wish i could do it too but am soooo scared after so long at one company. What was it that appealed about the new job?

flummingbird · 09/03/2022 17:21

Thanks all Smile

@Littlemiss74 it was through a recruiter so I didn't exactly pick it, but they've offered me an excellent package and it's only 10 minutes walk from home, which you can't pass up the way things are going! I'm terrified but I know I'll be fine, a couple of months in and I'll be up to speed and it'll be fine.

Well done OP.
I left a long term job. There are bad days when I regret leaving the security and easiness of what I left behind but if this happens to you just remember you left for a reason!

flummingbird · 10/03/2022 06:58

Thanks everyone, appreciate it. Very exited today, I'll get the official offer letter and then hand my notice in. Good times ahead.

Congratulations!!

I also have been offered new job after being in the same company for 12 years. I feel sick to stomach at the thought of resigning today! What's made it worse is the new place accidentally sent out my reference to my boss already so I'm in an awkward 'they don't know I know they know' type situation! I didn't want to hand in my notice until I had all the formal paperwork in but I feel like I've got no choice now so got to have the conversation. And need to get a grip on my nerves too!! Eek I hope I'm making the right choice!!

@NewSpark I put my CV on Indeed and a recruiter called me the next day. That's who I've got this job through...

Good luck, its terrifying but its going to really broaden what I can do and I'm getting excited.

@flummingbird - can I ask when you send your CV to Indeed who sees it? Would it be shown to any potential employers with vacancies or do they have to get your permission first?

flummingbird · 13/03/2022 18:34

I assume just any employers can see it... I got an email saying XYZ had seen my cv and wanted to know if I was interested in a job they had, and I had to click yes or no. I assume until I said yes they wouldn't have my name etc but can't be sure.
