Extra bank holiday in half term

Hi , I'm sure this is simpler than my brain is making it . The extra bank holiday falls in the school half term , does this mean term time workers are missing out on an extra day , as it's in holiday time ?

Not necessarily. Depends what your contract says about annual leave allowance.

isitbedtimeplease · 08/02/2022 19:53

Teen time workers always miss out on bank holidays.
Easter moves around so it's never benefited from
Just got to suck it up!

Leggingslife · 08/02/2022 19:53

Schools are free to add in another day off for the Jubilee to compensate.

isitbedtimeplease · 08/02/2022 19:53

Term....

brainhurts · 08/02/2022 19:54

So depending on my contact I might be entitled to an extra days pay ?

It depends on whether you contract says x amount of holiday, plus bank holidays or x including bank holidays

We've got 33 days annual leave including bank holidays so won't get anything extra this year HmmShock

Littlegoth · 08/02/2022 20:33

Also depends on what the contract says about bank holidays where they are in addition to your contract.

Plus bank holidays - yes you are entitled to pay for it.
Plus commonly/usually/similar wording observed bank holidays - you probably aren’t as it’s not one that’s usually observed.

superram · 08/02/2022 20:36

All schools are taking it. Ours was in December, my kids are the Friday before may half term.

brainhurts · 08/02/2022 20:52

@superram
Is it just they break up a day early ? Can't see on my school calendar were the extra day is . Going to look my contract out .

Some schools will finish early in the summer, some took it in January. It depends what works for the school. School staff don't miss out on Bank Holidays, there are factored into the 190 days contact time. This year there will be 189 days, due to the extra bank holiday. Teachers then have 5 Inset days on top - so usually 195 working days, this year 194.

@VivienneDelacroix
Thanks, I knew my brain was making it more complicated than it is . So basically I've had / will have an extra day somewhere in the term Smile

We finish a day early in summer.

Comefromaway · 09/02/2022 13:54

Do you work in a school?

I work in an office and we are not getting an extra days bank holiday. Our office will be closed on that day but all it means is that we lose a day holiday from somewhere else because our contract says 31 days INCLUDING bank holidays.

My husband is a teacher. I'm fairly sure he will be working the exact same number of days this year as he does in a normal year.

brainhurts · 09/02/2022 16:36

@Comefromaway
Yes I work in a school. I was looking at the holidays when I realised the additional BH with a half term. It got me thinking as I don't work that half term would I lose out on an extra day . My contact says holiday pay is pro rata factoring in BH , but we have an extra one , should I get extra pay ,is there a holiday added on or is it case of suck it up Confused. My supervisor is trying to find out for me as no one seems to have a clue

OP posts:
brainhurts · 09/02/2022 16:45

It seems this extra days holiday is not as extra day for a lot of people as holiday as holidays are worked out including BH.

I am term time and received an email from my employer telling me to claim for a days work as extra hours for the additional bank holiday so I will get paid a day extra.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 10/02/2022 06:40

Our school are adding it on to the last day of the year so we break up earlier.

Chosenonesneakymincepie · 10/02/2022 07:01

I'm a teacher and we had an extra day off in the Autumn term. My DC school added it to their xmas break.

FingersofFish · 10/02/2022 07:14

Ours has been added into half term. In another post here I was told it couldn't be in half term but I've checked and this is where the LA have put it. Staff aren't getting an extra day so I assume they get pay.

BendingSpoons · 10/02/2022 07:21

Our school recently emailed to say they are finishing a day earlier in July. Good luck getting it sorted.

brainhurts · 10/02/2022 07:53

It's all a bit of a muddle , I hope my supervisor can sort it . For context we have a mixture of full time workers and term time . The full time ones can book holiday when they want and haven't been told they can book one less as this bank holiday is taken off . Eg they can normally book 20 days of their choice and have bank holiday on top ,

The DFE have told schools that staff must be given the date elsewhere in the school calendar so that school staff benefit from it too.
We have already had it as a extra day off at the end of the Christmas holidays and my children's school have already had it too.

brainhurts · 10/02/2022 16:15

Quick update, my manager has said I don't get it as I don't work that week. Little miffed as my full time college will get it .

He can't just decide he's not giving you something you are entitled to. Please contact ACAS.
