Maternity leave - Any HR experts out there?

I read this as if you are on a fixed term contract which ends mid maternity leave, your employer pretty much has to renew unless there are non maternity related reasons, i,e bad at job or project ended etc.

So essentially, I am covered if I am doing a good job, meaning they will offer me a renewed contract

Sorry I clicked post by accident!

I am on a fixed term contract which ends mid maternity leave, they said there is pretty much 100% chance of renewing once it ends (well before they knew I was pregnant)
So hopefully they will renew on the grounds that they cant just because Im on mat leave.

Does make me wonder, how would that work, as if they renew it I still cant come back to work until the end of my mat leave.

Not necessarily, it just means if they don't renew there'd have to be evidence that it wasn't due to maternity leave. For example f they didn't renew yours but then went and got someone else to do the exact same job on a fixed term contract they couldn't argue that the role no longer being required was the reason, for example. That said if the role is likely to continue to be needed then yes, on maternity leave you rightly do have a level of protection.
