Rejected from job interview

So I applied in December had to do a written assessment which I got shortlisted for, then had the interview today, thought I’d done quite well til they rang me and said I hadn’t got it. I had the skills that matched but one of the questions threw me. Feel totally smashed and upset. It makes you feel so crap :(

Did you ask for feedback?

MaizeAmaze · 28/01/2022 19:02

It's quite likely you're not crap. You've already got further than most people who applied. It's just that on the interview day, someone else ticked more boxes. You did really well to get as far as you did, and hopefully next time it will be you that is topdog!

lottiegarbanzo · 28/01/2022 19:04

Yes, But it's not really about you - any judgement on you personally. It's just that another applicant suited them better for this particular position.

DistrictCommissioner · 28/01/2022 19:06

Yes - I had an interview two weeks ago & didn’t get it, I’m mostly over it now & but still occasionally thinking about what an idiot I am. They said they would send feedback but haven’t so I don’t know why I didn’t get it.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 28/01/2022 19:07

I’ve been applying and interviewing a lot recently. I see this as a project in itself and try and learn something from each interview, how better to demonstrate a skill, communicate your suitability. The more curveball questions you deal with, the better prepared you’ll be for the next one. You didn’t not get the job, you did gain experience. It still stinks though.

Mamamamasaurus · 28/01/2022 19:08

You're taking it personally - you're a name on a page to them, not a person.

RuthTopp · 28/01/2022 19:09

Try to see it as This - if your not quite right for them , they also would not have been right for you either .

JustAnotherSod · 28/01/2022 19:10

A job application always has two sides - one you can control in the quality of your application and your performance at interview, and the other that you can't in that you have no control over who else has applied and what skills and experience they have to bring.

Try not to beat yourself up over it - you'd be doing so over stuff you have no control over and that's no way to treat yourself.

masha17 · 28/01/2022 19:17

It's a rubbish feeling but don't beat yourself up. It just means on the day there was someone else who ticked more boxes. It doesn't mean you're rubbish, you wouldn't have got to interview if you were. Something better will come, keep trying Flowers

I’ve hired quite a few people recently, and sometimes it’s just someone fits that very specific role. It’s really no reflection on your abilities as a person.
We get so many applications we often have to turn down very good people.

Regularsizedrudy · 28/01/2022 19:32

Don’t think of it as rejected, someone was else just had the edge on the day

goingback · 28/01/2022 19:50

from doing interviews and subsequent selections, interviewees are usually assessed against others. You not getting the role probably has more to do with the other candidates being a better fit for whatever reason. Definitely ask for specific feedback on the question that threw you and good luck for the future.

Lolabray · 28/01/2022 21:41

MaizeAmaze Thank you that’s kind

And they gave me feedback it was about an area I wasn’t prepared for, and couldn’t really answer the question. I had spent about 10 hours researching revising and didn’t really understand what the role entailed. There was little information on the web. It’s just one of those things.

Chin up OP, you did really well to get that far, there was just someone else they preferred on the day. Keep looking, it’s a candidate’s market, that next role is yours Cake

Babyroobs · 31/01/2022 16:46

I felt like this after an interview a couple of weeks ago. I had so much experience in the area but just didn't interview well. I felt so embarrassed even though they said I was in the top three of about 15. Why they interview so many for one role I ahve no idea. Anyway last week I did get offered a role for a similar job so just keep going.
