Toxic workplace - reason for leaving

If trying to resolve our issues doesn't work , I am thinking of saying I am leaving for personal reasons, so that it doesn't affect my reference.

Are there any downsides to doing this?

You don’t have to give a reason for leaving
And the reason for leaving is not normally disclosed on a reference, unless you are sacked

References are typically employment dates and job title only

"leaving for career progression" (basically pretending there were no opportunities to progress). Don't say 'personal reasons'.
