Just changed jobs & now the perfect role has come up at my previous employer!!!

Extremely long story short, was working in a department for a long time (healthcare). Got to the stage where I was very comfortable/ experienced in that area, training up more junior members of staff, supervising students , essentially completing most tasks of a band above mine without the pay rise. Really lovely team but just no progression.

Ended up moving jobs for that reason to a new employer, slightly different role, have only been there for just over 5 weeks and now after no prospect of a vacancy for years, someone in a senior position at my old job has left and my old team have reached out to me to tell me they’re putting out an advert for the exact promotion that was never available! And urging me to apply.

I’m not presuming I will get this post, however if I were to interview and be successful… would this not look awful on my CV? This sector is a small world.

TIA x

Go for it. I stayed at the new job once and regretted in for ages.

Boomerangs are very common especially if the reason you left was for career advancement rather than not liking the past employer.

Everyone is allowed at least one mistake on their cv!

What's your new job like?

Is the other job your dream role?

I'd apply for it. You can always turn it down.

jackstini · 20/01/2022 19:20

Apply!! You will regret it if not
The only reason you left no longer applies.

I would just leave the v short gap in your CV and put the old company and 'old position 20xx-2021. New position 2022-present)

Guessing you are within 3 month probation at new place so could leave easily?

NaameChaange · 20/01/2022 19:21

Definitely go for it. It won't matter about your CV if you're going back to your previous employer

coldfeetmama · 20/01/2022 19:22

This happened to me about a while ago - also in healthcare - I boomeranged right back where I belonged
Be open , honest and direct with previous employer , this was the opportunity you had wanted
Then if successful - be exactly the same with the new employer
Good luck 🤞🏻

Oh go for it, boomerangs are very normal esp with a promotion.

saltandpepper234 · 20/01/2022 19:33

My cousin did this. Totally fine especially if you stay in the new role for a while or intend to stay with the new employer long term.

Thanks everyone. The new job is going ok so far, a little hard to tell as I’m so new! Its a shame it hadn’t happened a little further down the line as I’ve not really given the new job enough of a chance yet.
It’s absolutely typical timing but what can you do!
The post is not being advertised online for another few weeks , so I suppose that may help. I think if I still feel the same by then, I’ll go for it and whats to be will be! X
