I hate my new job.

I started a new job in November. I hate it. It’s not the job that was advertised or what I was interviewed for. They keep piling work on with no support or training in how to do it. They are giving me work for someone who is fully qualified in the profession at senior management level. I am in the office for hours a day by myself. It’s miserable. I feel gutted as I left my last job after 12 years. The new place sounded fantastic but the reality is completely different.

This is now causing sleepless nights and I have that sick to the pit of my stomach feeling every day. I am going to apply for new jobs.

I will update my CV and include the last 3 months.

What would you say on your covering letter to explain why the jump after just 3 months or would you say something like “you will see I am applying for a new job just a few months after starting my most recent. I would love to have the opportunity to discuss the reasons why at interview” or something similar. I’m not sure what to say if I am ever interviewed again either.

I wouldn't say anything, merely explain if asked at interview. Bad fits happen. You were at your previous job for many years, so you're clearly not a serial job-jumper. One bad job fit wouldn't deter me from shortlisting you.

Oh, and as for not being sure what to say if asked, it's simply not the job that you were led to believe it was. It's not a weakness to recognise that.

Thank you so much for responding. You’ve given me a lot of reassurance.

I disagree with PP, I would put a note in your covering letter much like you’ve written here. I used to recruit a lot and this wouldn’t put me off a candidate. I’m sorry you hate your job and good luck finding something else.

I said mine was a temporary fixed term contract 😉

Raspberryrippleplease · 26/01/2022 00:30

@BashfulClam I do this too

The fact that you were at your previous job for years is proof you are valuable and can stick with it. The only issue is someone is serially jumping from one job to another particularly before 6 months, because then I think they did not pass probation.

It is possible to not even mention this job. I wouldn't blink at a 3 month gap in your CV. The only thing is I dislike having to lie. So just brazen it out with the misdescription reason. I think that is fair enough.

Will your old employer take you back? That is what my colleague did. She came back Smile
