About to be signed off. What do I need to know?

I'm going to the GP this afternoon to be signed off work after a long-term bullying situation was failed to be resolved by management and has left me with PTSD-type symptoms.

My work culture is totally toxic (think political staffer, high levels of burnout and presentism, high stakes work and a lot of stigma about people who take time off for personal or health reasons as not being "resilient"). It's likely I'll not return, but that's if I can find another job first, and that's not until I can get on top of my stress related illnesses which the job has caused.

What do I do now? Do I need to tell management the exact reason for being signed off, or can I use a vague reason? If anyone else has been through this and come out the other side, what advice would you give me?

What is your GP going to write on the certificate? They may ask for a copy.

When I had a MMC my go just put 'gynae issues' so I don't have to go into detail.

How long are you being signed off for?

@itwasntaparty I've been signed off for four weeks with exhaustion. Will speak to manager on Monday. Feel relieved and also slightly unsure of what having this time off will do to my friend brain...

Why didn’t you just self certify for 28 days? I do know from an employer side, having something like work induced stress on a sick note makes the employer and HR sit up and take notice.
Hope you get a rest and feel better soon 💪🏼

If "workplace stress" is on your sick note your company will suddenly take you seriously and will be seen to do everything to get you to return. BUT do not be fooled. If you went back it would revert back to before and probably worse.

You are taking a brave step. Use this leave as the way forward to a better life. X
