Part time annual leave

Can someone tell me how many days annual leave I would be entitled to this year? I get really confused on part time what with bank holidays falling on days I don’t work etc

I work Tues, Weds, Thurs.

My company got it wrong last year and I was short a few days, which they corrected I queried further.

The government has a statutory holiday calculator on their website which may be useful for you. It depends what your contract says regarding what your annual leave entitlement is based on.

Bank Holidays should be calculated on a pro rata basis and any that fall on a day you work is deducted from the total. Then you can take the rest whenever you want. At least that's what my work does

As far as annual leave goes, you should get however many weeks at 3 days per week. So if you work full days it would be for example 6 weeks of 3 days so 18 days per year. I'd you work longer/shorter days it would be calculated by dividing your hours per week by full time hours per week and multiply by yearly full time annual leave allowance.

I always thought this was confusing in the UK.

In Aus, you get the day off if the bank holiday falls on your usual work day and nothing if it's your usual day off.

I work Monday to Thursday which gives me a few extra short weeks with bank holidays on Mondays.

Different places do bank holidays differently ime. What does your contract say about them, is your work open on BH?

But surely you can see that is unfair? Everyone is entitled to benefit from bank holidays regardless of their actual working days

What do full time staff get with regards to holidays/bank holidays?

The minimum is 5.6 weeks worth of holidays so if you work 3 days the minimum would be 3x5.6 = 16.8 days. This can include the pro rata bank holiday days depending what full time staff get.

If full time staff get more than 28 days holiday then you get â…— of the total holidays they get.

Yes...you will get pro rata bank holiday hours for these days .....so 3/5s hours of your normal working day

My work have included all my annual leave and bank holidays together. I get 27 days annual leave, plus 8 (9 this year) bank holidays - so most years it's 35 days. Pro rata to 3 days a week (0.6) it's 21 days. Any bank holiday that falls on a working day comes out of this allowance.

@BurscoughBooths there is no entitlement in the U.K. to have paid bank holidays off work unless in your contract .....many firms expect employees to work on bank holidays as a normal day..... I am nhs so I get bank holidays in addition to annual leave.....but not everyone is so fortunate

If you are entitled to BHs then if you work say a 7.5 hour day.....and your day off is a BH....you will have 4.5hrs added to your leave entitlement

Do they not just set out what holidays you have for the year at the start of the year and any bank holidays that fall on a day you would usually work are deducted leaving you with the rest to take when you want?

It sounds like you are complicating matters as you don't actually work on a Monday so nothing is deducted or added to your holidays

Annual leave gets calculated over a year so it will be assumed that you will take whatever leave you are entitled to. If there's a discrepancy at the end of the year, depending on your contract, you may either carry the excess (or some of the excess) over to the next leave year, or receive pay in lieu of holiday or have some unpaid leave days. You need to know when your leave year runs to to find out whether you'll get any extra this month. Leave years often match calendar years so it could be that you'll get an extra amount in your Jan wages.

When I worked 3 days, it was 20 days stat plus 8BH =28 divided by 5 days, times by 3 days you work and then deduct the BH that fall on your days, often Xmas/ Boxing Day.

I think it also depends on your contract. Mine is bank holidays and 25 days prorata ( which works out as I get 20 days a year + bank holidays)

I don’t work Fridays so any BH that falls on that day I get added to my annual leave so next year I will be get 2 extra days due to Good Friday and the queens jubilee day.

If everyone else gets 20 days holiday plus bank holidays, you get 3/5 of that 28 days. So 16.8 as mentioned above. Most companies would just say call that 17 days as long as your day length is sane as others (else you need to do it in hours)

I then have to book off the bank holidays if I would normally be working that day. (Though in practice I shift the day I work around). Sone companies may just automatically take it off at the start.

I don’t think you will get paid for the bank holiday if it’s not a normal day that you work
But you will be able to take it as annual leave from the 16.8 days available to you

You dont get paid for a bank holiday you arent working but a pro rata number of bank holidays will be added to your holiday entitlement for you to use on a bank holiday that falls on a working day or to take at another time.

In Australia not all public holidays are tied to Mondays so people who work on other days of the week will also get the that holiday if it falls on one of their regularly rostered days.

But a person who never works on a Monday has no expectation of being paid on that day.
