New job dilemma

I started a new job two months ago, however it's become apparent to me it's been a step backwards. I've seen another job advertised in my sector which is two grades above and I'm torn between thinking I should stick my hat in the ring for it but also could I be overstretching myself with it. I don't want to sit in this current job for very long as I'm concerned it'll just stifle my opportunity to progress.

Similarly, just wondering if anyone else has gone to a new job and then realised that it's a step back from the one they left? How did you handle this?

Unless promotion opportunities come up frequently would apply for the advertised one. Prep an answer for why you’re applying so soon after starting your current job.

Yes, this happened to me and it was horrendous.

I left and had to find another job quickly which meant I went from the frying pan to the fire but the new job was not a backwards step so much that my boss was really terrible.

I limped it out there for a couple of years through the pandemic until I was made redundant and only now 3 years later am I back in a better position although that's partly due to the pandemic making it hard to find new opportunities ( in 2020 certainly)

I'd apply for the new job, but have an answer ready for when you're asked why you want to peace your current position so soon... in my sector it would be something that would need to be addressed, but wouldn't necessarily stop us from offering the job. We would be cautious about anyone who did this frequently though!
