New job and pay

I started a new job beginning of December and my contract states paid on the 22nd of the month 3 weeks in arrears and 1 week in advance. 22nd December came and I did not get paid, I was then informed I would get paid 22nd of Jan for December and it’s always done a month in arrears.

Can I do anything?

No...that's what being paid in arrears means. You work in advance for the money....

I'd be a bit annoyed at not getting paid for 2 months if it hadn't been explained in advance. What date did you start? at my work I know the payroll has to be done quite a bit earlier in December than all the other months and sometimes a new employee might not make it on in time.

What did your HR department say?

I started on the 6th. We don’t have a HR department but the guy who does the finance said it’s always paid the month after starting. It’s very annoying as I did not find out until the day I was due to be paid and then the finance guy was on leave.

The month after starting is possibly a little unclear is it, in your case January is the month after you started so that would be right. If you were going to get paid in December he would have said the month that you start wouldn't he?

Are you going to be working a month in hand then? I'd be asking that question...

FitAt50 · 29/12/2021 13:01

I would not have expected to be paid as you said its 3 weeks in arrears and you only started 2 weeks before pay day.
