Anyone work for the Clvil Service / DVLA?

I recently applied for an AO within the DVLA on a bit of a whim. I've been offered the job but I'm in two minds about whether to accept or not. It sounds a bit like working in a call centre with some 'case work' and 'medical licensing decisions'. This is not something that I'd want to do long term and the reason I considered it was that it might be a good way of building up skills to enable me to progress. Is this likely? Is career progression encouraged?.
I also had an interview for a DFT EO role two weeks ago but as I haven't heard anything yet I'm assuming that I was unsuccessful. I would have loved that job. Would I be better to apply for jobs at this level? I just don't really know what to do and thought someone who works in the CS might be able to advise. Thank you.

Two weeks is no time at all in the civil service
As far as jobs go. Once your in there's a lot of internally advertised ones only open to current civil servants.

Thank you Rollerbird. I'm not sure what the deadline is for acceptance so I'll hang on a bit longer. Good point about internally advertised roles. I hadn't thought about that.
