Booked emergency hospital appointment

I booked a hospital appointment in the morning for 1pm (only slot). This clashed with a meeting that lasted 10 minutes. I told my boss immediately I won't be able to join. I then speak with him latter and goes on to say how weird it is that I had a hospital appointment last minute and he would like to get details of my hospital.

In last 2 years I have taken 1 sick day.

Is this crazy or am I going crazy!

I've never heard of a last minute hospital appointment either if I'm honest...
Although I don't think he needs to know the details of the hospital, I do need to show my employer appointment letters/cards if possible.

Meandmini3 · 07/12/2021 19:52

I think it’s normal for an employer to expect evidence of an appointment taken during working hours.

ThisIsStartingToBoreMe · 07/12/2021 20:02

I've never heard of a last minute hospital appointment either, sorry.

Just show your employer your evidence.

dchange · 07/12/2021 20:02

That's new to me. Not sure how I can provide evidence of a GP appointment in UK. You call in the morning to get appointment in the afternoon (same day). They don't issue a letter.

Keen to learn more. In my 20 years experience I have never been required to show employers evidence of appointment.

You didn't say GP - you said hospital - which is it?

In any case, show your employer a screenshot of your phone call list, if thats all you've got.

Preemptedyou · 07/12/2021 20:04

So it's not a hospital appointment?

Pinkflipflop85 · 07/12/2021 20:04

So it was a GP appointment not a hospital appointment...

dchange · 07/12/2021 20:06

Apologies. Gp practice is in the hospital building so just say hospital.

But this is interesting that I actually need to provide evidence. Would never have thought!

Your boss obviously doesn't trust you Wink

It's still odd to have a GP appointment at 1pm - usually it's a morning clinic or a late afternoon clinic.

ftw163532 · 07/12/2021 20:08

A GP appointment is not a hospital appointment.

Emergency hospital appointments exist but the hospital makes them not you. I would be surprised if someone told me they had "booked an emergency hospital appointment" too.

Why did you lie and say it was hospital not GP?

They may have been more inclined to believe it was a GP appointment tbh. I think the fact you said it was a last minute hospital appointment is what raised the doubt.

ftw163532 · 07/12/2021 20:10

But it still wasn't a hospital appointment.

Saying it was a hospital appointment is what makes it sound suspect.

I wouldn't blink about a same day GP appointment, that's normal enough.

I have often had lunchtime ones at my surgery. You call in the morning and book for all day, not 'lunch break' that I can tell so guessing different GP's have different time off for lunch.
dchange · 07/12/2021 20:13

To be honest I was not lying. I called in the morning to see the GP and they have me an afternoon slot at 1pm as been complaining about bowel issues that have been ongoing. Now, what I did not expect was for him to ask for evidence even though this was the first time I have had such appointment.

I think ultimately he does not trust me.

I think your description of 'hospital appointment' might be the problem here. I don't think most employers would ask for evidence of a GP appointment (although they may be within their rights to do so) unless it was something that happened a lot so they didn't think was genuine. However yes in my experience most would ask for evidence for a hospital appointment and you would generally have a letter for this.
Divebar2021 · 07/12/2021 20:14

My Drs have introduced a painful email / text system so you can’t actually arrange appointments on the phone - you get sent a text message with the day and time. I would be pretty offended if I was asked to show proof of my appointment. In 22 years at my employer I have never been asked to show anything.

Orchidflower1 · 07/12/2021 20:17

It’s because you’ve said hospital @dchange if you’d said GP it would make sense. I’d be a bit confused if someone said hospital. That’s why they are questioning it.

ftw163532 · 07/12/2021 20:17

You booked a GP appointment and then told your employer it was a hospital appointment. It wasn't a hospital appointment. You knew it wasn't a hospital appointment.

Anybody would be surprised that someone claimed to have been able to book themselves in for a same day hospital appointment! It's implausible.

Why didn't you just say "oh it was a GP appointment" when he commented on how weird it was If this wasn't deliberate deception?

dchange · 07/12/2021 20:18

I have no issues showing evidence, it's just the absurdity of the request. He has not asked other people for letters who have fallen sick more often, but he seems to always have something against me.

Ok, will show the evidence Smile

OP posts:
gogohm · 07/12/2021 20:19

It will show on the app. Your mistake though was to say hospital because that's what threw him

dchange · 07/12/2021 20:19

I struggle to see why the word hospital is important. If I have an appointment, I should be trusted. The issue here is he does not trust.

OP posts:
ftw163532 · 07/12/2021 20:20

My employer's policies state that they can/will request copy letters for hospital appointments.

Because some people take the piss and invent fictional appointments.

You may not have meant to, but by calling this a hospital appointment throughout and not correcting yourself you have made yourself seem like one of those people.

If you had just said GP I doubt he would have given it a second thought.

FusciasBright21 · 07/12/2021 20:21

I'd say it's reasonable to ask for evidence of having had a hospital appointment, how do you know others haven't had to provide evidence?

dchange · 07/12/2021 20:23

What's interesting is that I booked my daughter her flu jab for a different day in the same GP practice. In my diary it states - hospital Appointment- flu jab. I guess I need to more explicit especially if I am being scrutinised

But in his eyes you can't be trusted as you said hospital appointment and it was a gp appointment.
