Part time worker advice please

Just wondering if anyone could help please? My company has kindly given everyone an extra 2 days off work over Xmas. However, as I work part time & one of the day is my day off I have basically been told I will only get one day. I asked my boss to talk to HR but nothing can be done I will only be allow 1 day. However, term time only workers can chose any 2 days to take off. I feel I am been penalised for working part time. Any advice please before I talk to HR about this? Thank you in advance

What % of full time are you.

Chunkymonkey13 · 07/12/2021 19:23

My holidays are pro rata so depending on what your % is that would make sense. You wouldn’t be entitled to the same holiday days as a full time colleague but a %

Chunkymonkey13 · 07/12/2021 19:24

Ahh just seen you say a term time worker, it should be they are on a % too

SleighbellsZ · 07/12/2021 20:39

Depends on % as pp

MolkosTeenageAngst · 07/12/2021 20:41

How many days do you work? If you work 2.5 days or less then 1 day off is fine, if you work 4 days then it should be closer to a day and a half.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 07/12/2021 20:44

The OP having to pro rata the extra days does my make sense if term time workers get the full 2 days.

SuperheroBirds · 07/12/2021 20:56

Like previous posters, everywhere I have worked part time people get the extra time off pro rata.
But if the office closed for an exceptional reason (snow, etc) then those who were supposed to work would get paid as they were willing to work and it wasn’t their fault the office wasn’t open, but those not due to work wouldn’t get any floating extra time to take when they felt like it.

Thanks everyone sounds like I shouldn’t get the day off then. Just seems unfair that the term time workers who are already off on the extra 2 days get to pick 2 other days. Whereas I work all year round but part time will only get a day off

I think in the circumstances you have described it is really unfair and you should raise it with HR.
I understand PP responses about pro rata leave but that's not what has been offered here.

ivegotthisyeah · 07/12/2021 21:42

@Whattodonow6322 that's not right, if term time only get the two days off so should you as they are classed as part time too. I'm not a HR expert but been part time for over 10 years and the arguments I've had with my work only for them to back down as I was right is unreal!
Should not be penalised if you are part time.
I also think it depends on the circumstances so if you work tues/wed/ thur and the shut down days are mon/ tues then you should perhaps get the tues off ( as workplace not open) but the term time only shouldn't get any as it's in school holidays presuming your talking about Xmas week or in between Xmas and new year.

Yes it is 2 extra days just before Christmas so the 23rd & 24th. I would be off the 24th anyway. The term time staff finish on the 17th. It was sent in an email as a bonus for all our hard work that would get a pay rise (a rubbish one), a shopping voucher & 2 extra days holiday as a thank you. However, I will only get 1 day off the Thursday 😔

@Whattodonow6322 so you could argue as the term time aren't even at work so shouldn't get it if your not getting the 24th back - they are part time and getting two days back you are part time and getting one day back. It's not fair and it's not right. It's hard because I imagine you don't want to rock the boat after the generous announcement but I feel you are being short changed.
At my work I imagine they would say if it doesn't fall in your working pattern you can take the days at an alternative time within a time frame.

You've said it better here than me 😂
