Possible Racism - What would you do?

Hi,

I have a client who is in the same role as me but for the other company. We were discussing customers orders when he said 'I don't want this to come out the wrong way but it's always the customers with foreign last names who seem to steal orders'

I think he forgot that I do in fact have a foreign last name (however white British, the same as him)

I said oh what like people with the surname 'my last name'

He quickly sounded embarrassed and continued to ask me about last name customs in my country (we use 2 surnames but for work I use my second one but at times he has seen both)

Would this be worth mentioning to my HR? It has made me feel uncomfortable now.

Why would you mention it to HR when he works for another company? You’ve addressed it with your client. Maybe he’ll think before spouting racist views next time.

I don't know, maybe for advise on what can be done?

I just worry about my son having to deal with this sort of stuff when he's older and me not feeling I have held people accountable for it.

I think you have held him to account.

What is it you imagine can be done about a comment made by somebody working for another company?
