Maternity leave, interview and notice period

I am currently on maternity leave and due back to work in March when my baby is 1. I have an interview and have told them my notice period is 8 weeks which would mean going back a month early in February which is sad but fine. However I have just found a new childcare which I love but they only accept children from 12 months. Should I tell them at interview or would this hurt my chance of getting the job as they’d be waiting for me for a month longer than my notice period? Or do I wait and see if I get the job and then tell them?

Thank you

If I were you, i'd wait for the offer and talk about potential start date and then you can discuss your issues. The employer will likely be understanding that way. At least when you accept the offer you are interested in the job but worried about childcare so I do think its an issue they will be understanding about.

You aren't technically committed to the job until you signed the contract so its very premature to worry about this right now

That was my thinking too, just wanted to make sure I approach it in the right way if I am lucky enough to be offered the job.

Thank you for your reply

Something similar happened to me and the employer was very understanding. I think you'll be in a stronger position to negotiate once the offer is with you and them being more willing to your specific needs.

Good luck x
