Not returning to work after maternity leave

I hope I’ve done this right because I’ve never made a post here before so apologies if I’ve messed up.

I’m currently a teacher and have taught in my current school for just over one year (started newly qualified last September), I have recently found out I am pregnant and I am considering not returning to work after the baby is born because of a combination of many things including nursery fees and not really enjoying it. My pay isn’t great and I would almost be working in order to put the baby in childcare if I was to go back full time. My partner has agreed to this as he is able to cover the household bills etc.

Has anyone had any experience as to if you need to repay your maternity pay if you chose not to return? Would this apply if I returned for a few weeks (would be until the end of the school year) and then handed in my notice? I haven’t even left work yet and I’m already dreading going back to it.

You'd only repay enhanced pay back unless you went back to work for the specified period of time afterwards. SMP doesn't need to be paid back

You should see if you can find a copy of your maternity policy as that will give you the answer.

Where I work, you have to return for 13 weeks in order to not repay your occupational maternity pay. Agreed, you wouldn’t pay back SMP.

You can tell them that you're not planning to return. Then you won't get paid OMP so won't have to pay anything back.
