Advice please... I've worked for a company for about 6 years and I was required to use my own car for business use. The policy for using my car did not change but the company allowed us to hire in cars when we were doing a lot of business travel.

The mileage allowance remained the same 34p...or at least I was not told that it had changed so continued to submit my mileage each month. I didn't actually claim 34p but just submitted my mileage.

The employer has stated today that I should have been submitting receipts for the petrol and not claiming mileage. Nothing in writing and I was not informed verbally either.

I appreciate I have been overpaid compared to petrol costs. The company have in turn reclaimed this money from a third party (the same amount).

Not sure how I stand? This has been going on for 4 years although sometimes I've used my own car.

Any advice please?

The 34p includes wear and tear on your car and insurance, servicing etc not just petrol costs.

Yes but there is no wear and tear on a hire car....

You should have claimed mileage on your OWN car - and petrol receipts on your HIRE car.

You now need to speak with your Manager/HR department to see what the next steps are - you may need to repay some (or all) of the overpay.

Thanks House of Fire. I should have questioned whether I needed to do get petrol receipts.

To be honest, whoever signed your expenses off should have known this, so hopefully they wont make too much of a fuss
