Not really understanding the minimum floor and how it affects payments.... had a gateway meeting, now im classed as gainfully employed so I can grow business and not need to look for work but I'm not sure what it all means as far as payments go.Confused. Been on gov website and still can't work out if I'm better or worse off... anyone any experience of this??

@Bluetitsfly
If self employment is your main source of earned income then they can decide that you are gainfully self employed. If this is your first universal credit claim then for the first year your universal credit payments will be based on your actual profits. This means that if you are making losses they will treat you as having no earnings (unless you have another job.)

After a year you may be affected by the minimum income floor. That applies if they expect you to be looking for work or working (eg not if you have a new baby or are assessed as too ill to work).

If the floor applies then they treat you as making a profit even if you don’t or make less. The calculation is minimum wage x hours they expect you to work. An example- you are single no children that would likely be 35 hours per week. If you earn more profit they use that higher figure.

It can be a bit complicated to get your head around but if this is your first time being self employed on universal credit then you won’t be negatively affected for a year. Here is a link to citizens advice
