bank holiday pay?

I was always under the impression all companies had to pay you for a bank holiday if you weren't required to work.. am i right?

No, there is no automatic right to Bank Holidays. The minimum holiday pay has been increased from 20 days to 24, and will increase again to 28 (pro-rata for part-timers) in April 2009. This is so that the minimum is the equivalent to four weeks plus bank holidays (i.e. 20+8), but there is still no requirement to pay you for the actual bank holiday, so long as you receive the statutory minimum allowance.

whats the "statutory minimum allowance"? so over christmas a company can say they dont need u for 4 days (even tho ur full time) and its ok to be off and get nothing for it ? sounds harsh to me

Statutory minimum allowance is currently 24 days holiday per year. As mrsstresshead says, they have the right to force you to use some of that leave to cover company shutdowns and they don't have to "give" you the bank holidays on top, although a lot of companies do.

so if they make you take it as a holiday then least you get holiday pay right?
