New job not what I expected

I’ve just started a new job, in the interview I was told the role was flexible in working hours, as long as job gets done I can work the hours I choose, however I would be expected to work in the office full time for training & there would be some weekend working.

I’m now coming to the end of my 4th week, I’ve been given work every weekend (probably 3/4 hours work) but no warning & expected to drop everything to get it done ASAP. Still expected to work every day in the week.

I’ve had a word as I’m struggling with the work/life balance & been told this is how it is, does anyone think this is reasonable? I’ve got 4 children and I’m exhausted.

Are they saying you will always be given work to do at the weekends...or have you started at a peak work load period?

Mrmoose23 · 24/09/2021 08:44

I have started at a peak period but they are just taking on more work so will be busier again. Every weekend definitely until next year. I’m also working until 6/7 in the evening

If you could work 10pm- 2 am until up to 7pm that its true
Sound more like workload than flexibility, ie could you work all weekend but not Tuesday am for example

No we are expected to be available in the week but could possibly work Monday all day & in evening to have Tuesday morning off. Also I’m self employed but it doesn’t feel like it. I gave up a job for this so reluctant to walk away but equally cannot work 40/50 hours a week over 7 days which is what is expected

Why do you think you are self employed?
Is it because they have told you you are or do you actually fit the criteria

Mrmoose23 · 25/09/2021 09:59

It doesn’t feel like I fit the criteria but they have told me I’m self employed. I don’t get a salary and I have a retainer

Are you payrolled on a zero hours contract?

Mrmoose23 · 25/09/2021 11:18

No I’m not on the payroll, I get paid when a sale goes through, it just takes a few months. However there are so many leads that there is too much work hence the working hours

OP, you need to leave!

You are not getting paid for a few months? You are probably earning below the NMW with the number of hours you are doing. And I believe the maximum you can work is 48 hrs per week so you might be going over that.

Don't be so silly and find something else. They are taking the piss and potentially breaking the law.

I think you need to find a new job, you don’t want to do the hours they need you to do - you have limited options.

Mrmoose23 · 26/09/2021 17:08

Thanks. I’m happy to work hard & be flexible but need work/life balance, I’ve been working until 8pm. I’m going to leave, just gutted I gave up a job for this.
