Split maternity leave

Hi, I've just returned to work early from maternity leave to take up a 4 month acting-up position. Thought long and hard about this and the experience this role will give me will very much help me secure a new position which is likely to be better paid, and then I'll be able to afford to go part-time. BUT, I miss my DS's NOW! A colleague suggested I might be able to complete the rest of my maternity leave when the acting-up position ends. Has anybody done this? Would this be allowed? I'm returning just over three months earlier than I originally wanted. I work in a Local Authority. I will not be seeing my manager for a few days as she is on leave so thought I'd ask you guys instead :-)

Any ideas.

AFAIK you can't split Mat Leave. It has to be taken in one lump. You could probably get parental care leave but that is unpaid.
