Payroll Question

Hi,

Any payroll people here?

If an employee is hired but only completes one shift before leaving, would you still pay them in the same way? I.E set them up on payroll, make payment, P45?

After looking on gov.uk I can see guidance for 'Employees you only pay once' which says to place them on 0T tax code, no start or leave date and no P45.

My question is , would this only be if you hired the person knowing it was a one off payment and instead of taking them on and then they leave?

I'd treat it that way regardless of hiring intention at the outset. Not worth the admin.

We would probably have already set them up on payroll system before they dis their shift/left so they would just get the one payslip and their P45. It takes seconds really as we use Sage Payroll so no hardship to do it that way.

@Hellocatshome this is what I thought. I'm currently setting up the new starters to process the payroll in a couple of weeks.

My thinking was if they accrued a little holiday pay from their one shift, they would be owed and if they are put on the correct tax code then they would pay less tax rather than 0T but someone is reluctant to give me the new starter information

I heard that payroll tax might give an employee 6.2% of their salaries back, which usually goes for social security and medicare. This suggestion is really to ease the 7.5% from companies/employers so they possibly now won’t have to lay you all off. I believe that a Payroll tax cut is not an adequate way to control a failure in demand. It’s some bullshit politics that will cost us valuable time during this mess. I have a small business and create pay stubs free online, so my employees don't have to worry about all the expenses.
