Fixed term contract, when to apply for new role?

Hello all

I am currently on a fixed term contract (covering a secondment) that is due to end at the end of February next year. I was wondering the best time to look for another job, perhaps November? Although I realise things get quiet around end of November/December time.

Application/interview processes can take as long as they take depending on the role or industry of course, but wondered if any recruiters had any sound advice please? I realise it’s still another 6 months away but I don’t want to be unemployed for any length of time!
My current role is an Executive Assistant in Education.

Thanks!

I would start looking now tbh. Your contract should have provision for you to give notice before the end of the fixed term, and if you can find a permanent role you don't owe anything to your current employer.

I would be keeping an eye out now for a permanent role.

Thank you both, I’ve been keeping my eye out so gives me time to find the right thing for me!

My last FTC was ending in late April and I started looking in January; it took 3 months to find the right thing and I ended up with back to back contracts, no break, which was perfect.

Of course the new role is FTC ending in January and I’ve begun looking.

I started looking and applying 3 months before my contract was due to end.

Yes I'd start looking now, a lot often comes up in September. I've got a permanent role but a 2 month notice period and I know others with 3 months. Like others say, unless you're worried about burning bridges, you can always give notice.

Thank you all and thanks for sharing your experiences, I’ll start looking. Give me a chance to find something I really want!
