Nasty redundancy and references?

Hi, Dp has had an awful bullying boss who finally made redundant in a really nasty way. We think there was a lot of professional jealousy .

How does Dp get a reference? Is he allowed one? What’s to stop x boss spreading rumours?
Should Dp approach the companies hr?
He did fight the redundancy but got a lot of stress and got nowhere fast.it’s been awful for us all as a family.
Thanks

His company’s HR department will provide a reference to new employers. References must be accurate and factual, and in most cases they are very simple and cover dates of employment etc

Not sure what you mean by “spreading rumours”? Is the boss well-connected in the industry and therefore might know future employers personally? What kind of rumours??

He can request a reference and/or put them down as a reference on any application form.

His former employer can refuse to provide one though.

You should also be aware that they can give a bad reference, as long as its true. If not, you can try to challenge that.

If possible, use another employer or character reference instead.

HR departments normally do references rather than managers. He can put them down as the reference contact.

A reference cannot include untrue statements.

Thanks all. I’ll tell him to put down hr dept. Yes his boss has lots of contacts, suspect it’s a lot to do with bosss project not doing so well and dps being hyped as massive. So silly. If boss had just said, yes we are a team it would have been great. But boss done everything he could to undermine dps project. It’s still come out top tho, which I suppose is good. Especially as boss gets to do all the lah Dee dah announcing stuff. So boss may well need to slag Dp off to justify his decision.
