Has anyone had an interview with the IMechE for CEng? I have mine coming up and I’m so so anxious about it and would love to hear any stories of other people’s experiences..?

I support people through the chartership process for my company. I didn't get interviewed for mine but I know what it's like.
At the moment, it's done by Zoom/Teams. Have you got any particular concerns about it?

SisterA · 16/08/2021 11:21

Hi @BobbinThreadbare123,

Thanks for your response I'm sorry I've only just seen it.

No particular concerns really I suppose I'm just a super anxious person with a crazy case of imposter syndrome and thought some success stories would make me feel a bit better!

This is so cool.

I’m nowhere near even applying for CEng (graduating in sept) but I just wanted to say good luck 👍🏾If you’ve come far enough to apply and get an interview youve obviously done very well so far, long may it continue 🤞🏼.

Thanks @FTEngineerM!

What kind of engineering are you studying? My degree is in mechanical (obviously) but I've found myself in subsea so that's fun :)

That sounds like an interesting area, and could take you to some very nice places 🌎.

Just applied for a structural MSc if I pass this final project of course

SkiingIsHeaven · 16/08/2021 19:24

I had good cop, bad cop. That was quite scary until I realised what they were doing.

Just stay calm and think before you answer.

Know your stuff inside and out and be prepared to expand on what you have written in your submission.

Use engineering terms. Not layman's terms.

Good luck.

SisterA · 16/08/2021 20:22

Thank you so much @SkiingIsHeaven for sharing your experience. I do have a mock interview soon so hope that'll prepare me... I'm just white a nervey person!

@FTEngineerM I'm sure you'll get onto your MSc no bother! Best of luck!

I didn't realise anyone had replied to this!

OK, speak clearly, make sure your project case studies are concise and the biggest one I have to mention when coaching women....
Use the word "I" - this is YOUR professional development! You can highlight teamwork but the examples are yours and what you did. I hear too much "we" and it makes it sound like you were just along for the ride.
Brush up on your application and CV before the interview too; they'll ask you about it.

SisterA · 17/08/2021 10:19

@BobbinThreadbare123 thanks so much for these tips!

It's not until next week but the time is really creeping up on me... after working towards it for what feels like soooo long I know I need to just take the (well prepared) plunge! I've just been studying my application so I know it inside out so hoping questions don't really stress me out.

I supervise applicants for the ICE.

I understand about the panic.
I'd prepare some answers for questions where you don't know the answer if you see what I mean. They may want to test you on how you would find out. Sometimes the interviewers have their own specialities and ask you a question related to that.

Things like - that's not my area of specialism but I would contact xx colleague / use my professional network/ I did read an article about it ...

So you don't just freeze - one of the competencies is knowing the limits of knowledge and taking advantage of trainign/CPD etc.

Honestly don't worry, if you have got to this stage you are already qualified enough!

SkiingIsHeaven · 19/08/2021 00:58

OP. Let us know how you get on.

Good luck

SisterA · 19/08/2021 10:57

I'll report back post interview! Not long to go!

Had my interview.... won't find out for a mammoth 8-12 weeks. Some areas felt strong, some really didn't. I'm not feeling very confident about it but will find out in due course!

Thanks for the advice and support.
