Are they new, struggling to find their feet, don't have much else to do? If so it may get better?

ilovebrie8 · 29/07/2021 09:23

No they are not new. I think it’s their style but I am getting fed up ...tried to raise it but fell on deaf ears

My boss is a big micro manager - i think their whole job is managing the people under them, they don't seem to have much independent work (it's a new role). I just have to tell myself it's not about me, it's about them. It is a pain though!

Sparklingbrook · 29/07/2021 09:44

I had one of those. I tried to ignore for the most part, it didn't make the department work any more effectively.

ilovebrie8 · 29/07/2021 09:47

it is pointless running through what you are doing daily, day....it is wearing me down...

The constant questions was very wearing. Questions they should have known the answer to. Having to break away from your work to answer the questions. Angry

I have one of these too. I try to keep her in the loop as much as possible via email/Teams chat so that she doesn’t have much to ask me, because I update her as I do things.

It’s incredibly draining though and I’m thinking of leaving.

memberofthewedding · 29/07/2021 14:34

Make it as difficult as possible for them to get in touch with you. I had one of these but it was the 1990s before smart phones and social media and the internet was in its infancy. Thank heavens.

LonstantonSpiceMuseum · 29/07/2021 14:41

Wow, tricky situation and a difficult one, especially if it's fallen on deaf ears.
You may have tried this already but see if you can address it directly while also "agreeing" with your boss.
Explain that you've noticed that she/he is having to bombard you with qs, and set a daily meeting of about half an hour where you go through what you've done, answer questions, and go through your plan for the day. If she pesters again, ask if it's urgent and to save for the next day.
Also, save "visible" bits of work throughout the week so it looks like you are making progress. Eg keep adding slides to a presentation rather than doing it all at the end of a week.

In my experience a new manager will take one of two paths :

  1. Start making changes to the way things are run immediately they're in post or
  2. Take time to understand the way the department works, including individuals' tasks before making any changes

It could be that your boss falls in category 2), if they haven't been there long.

I had one of these after I’d been doing the job well enough for around 15years and knew more about the work area than she did, just through the sheer amount of time I’d spent in it.
I’m not sure if I’d recommend doing it but
I started bombarding her with emails about various things, what was the update from this senior meeting, what were the legislative changes all which were part of her job and would impact my job. I would give updates about my work, and then ask questions about it, what did she think about this that etc.
She then started avoiding me.
She didn’t actually know her own job so eventually got sacked. I don’t think I’d have the mental energy to do that again though and I’d probably leave.

Ceriane · 30/07/2021 11:24

I had one of these, I ended up having to leave as it got so bad.

Metabigot · 01/08/2021 08:07

I've learned the hard way that they'll never change and to question it is futile.

The only solution is to leave
