Secondment

Good Morning,

I have been offered an internal secondment position, I am just wondering if anyone has any experience with formally notifying their manager from their substantive post? I have informed my manager verbally but she said I would need to give notice in writing, I understand that I need to give 4 weeks notice but I am not sure how to word it in a letter because my substantive post will be kept open, I am not giving notice to leave so to speak.

If anyone is able to offer any advice I would be really grateful.

Thanks everyone Smile

In my company you don't notify your manager, you ask permission. They don't have to release you, so better to tread on the side of courtesy.
Put your request in writing, with a preferred transfer date, and request a meeting to discuss.

I agree with the above post. A secondment is normally something that is agreed between all parties; yourself, your manager, the manager on the secondment. It is strange that you have “notified” your manager, are you sure it isn’t being viewed as a resignation rather than a secondment?

Hello!

Thanks so much for your replies, I am still confused, I think it's how my manager worded it when I told them about the offer, they said I need to give them four weeks notice? I will write to them but I will politely request to be released from my substantive post.

Now I am confused as to when I 'give them notice' if I write to them today (Thursday 29th July), will this mean my notice period starts on the next working day (30th July) which is a Friday so my last working day would be Friday 27th August?

Any help is much appreciated :-)

I expect the Thursday would technically be the last day, but surely the secondment start date is something you would agree with all parties anyway. As mentioned previously, this sounds odd and if I were you, I would be concerned that this was actually handing my notice in!
