What’s the best way of responding to the question what are your salary expectations?

I don’t want to price myself out, but don’t want to undersell myself either….

Ask for market rate. That puts the ball firmly back in their court and you can negotiate from there

We ask this question because we don't want to waste our time or yours - if you expect a salary we are not willing to pay - we don't want to interview you. Dh says he would say I earn £x I consider this to be a material step up so I would consider an increase of x% as reasonable and back up with research you have conducted on market rate. I think that's what he'd respond to as an employer. A bit fact (your current salary), a bit expectation and a bit of market research.
