Confidentiality at work

I recently received a new contract from my workplace which stated my salary.
My colleague told me today that she knew my salary as she saw the letter, my manager had left it on his desk with the office door open and the wind had blown it into the corridor.
I feel annoyed that my personal information has been seen, should I take this further?

"The wind had blown it into the corridor"? 🤔 That sounds a little...far-fetched.

Yes I think you should raise it. It sounds like an odd scenario and should be investigated.

Alpinechalet · 17/07/2021 10:23

Raise it as your colleague should not know this information.

whilst I think salaries shouldn't be a secret, it definitely sounds sloppy that confidential information were not kept safe.

do you have a data security manager you could take that up with?

Seriously not something I would be worked up about at all.

m0therofdragons · 19/07/2021 11:09

She should not have read it then told you - totally unprofessional of her!

I work in the nhs though so we all know each other’s salaries.

Inform your colleague that they weren't supposed to read it and that they should of informed your manager if there was confidential information that has come out of his room. You could also talk to your manager and Hr to see how this can be managed if further action is needed.

You could also find a lawyer about advice, if you need extra help

I'd mention that you're not happy about it and then drop it

I would guess it was in his desk and she read it rather than it blew into the corridor. Wouldn't bother me personally I dont get all this secrecy over salaries.
