Going for job with internal candidates

Hi
I applied for a job and was told I’d be invited to a panel with presentations and more of the management team. Gone through a recruitment consultant and I had a rapport with the lady hiring as we both knew a mutual friend. They have an internal candidate however and the lady who will make the decision is on holiday till 6 July. The recruiter said it was between me and this other person as they’d stopped accepting cvs but I’ve not had the panel interview. Do you think they are basically hiring the internal? Not sure I trust recruitment consultants!

I’ve known externals get the job over highly rated internal candidates. If they follow a fair process you could get the role. Good luck
