NHS bank holiday A/L entitlement

Hi, I’ve just accepted a role in a surgery where I’ll be working 23.5 hours per week (4.5 Monday, 9 on a Tuesday and weds). I’m going from a hospital where I work all shifts and can manipulate my shifts and weekends to suit with life and childcare.

I’m after advice regarding bank holidays. My usual working day will now be a Monday (4.5 hours) and therefore these hours will be deducted from my allowance each time there is a bank holiday Monday. I’m not sure whether I have screwed myself over or not by choosing to work a Monday. For example, I could have chosen to work a Thursday and I wouldn’t have lost these bank holiday hours in my entitlement.

Can I clarify, would I still have been entitled to those bank holiday hours within my entitlement even if my usual working day wouldn’t be a Monday? That seems crazy that some people will have loads of a/l even though they have that day off anyway.

I also think that bank holiday Mondays typically fall within school holidays and therefore I have guaranteed at least one working day less per week during school holidays.

Any advice/words of wisdom greatly appreciated. Thank you!

You will have less choice as to when to take your holidays (as some will be used for Bank holidays) but should have the same number of holidays (pro rated) as full time staff.

Provided you only lose the hours you are contracted to work (4.5) this is correct. The reason you feel you have less holiday is because you work 9 hours Tue and Wed. This means you lose 9 hours each time you take one of those days as leave. Your average day is 7 hours 50 minutes.

As you're part time, your annual leave is given in hours, and then you are given additional hours pro-rata for the bank holidays. They are then taken off when you are off on a BH that you would normally work on.
Is there an option on a BH week to work those Monday hours on another day?

Yes - I work 0.6WTE so I get the number of bank holiday days x 0.6 added to my annual leave entitlement. If a BH falls on my working day I have to use my leave.
So if a BH falls on a Monday you will need to use 4.5 hours leave and if it falls on a Tuesday / Wed you need to use 9 hours
