How long are DBS checks taking?

CrispsnDips · 24/06/2021 08:02

My new employer applied for my DBS on 23 May but it is, apparently, still at the stage 4 (Police check). I was wondering how long other people are having to wait...i’ve already left my previous job WHOOPS

I'm finding about two weeks so I'm surprised how long yours has been,

Landslidelife · 24/06/2021 10:55

Dc1 applied last week - came back yesterday (so 10 days).

Redannie118 · 24/06/2021 10:59

My DS has just had an enhanced one back in 2 weeks, but dont want to scare you DH lost a job waiting 8 weeks for one.

CrispsnDips · 24/06/2021 12:27

Thanks everyone ! I’ve just had an email confirming the application has moved to the next stage (issuing the certificate) PHEW 😅

Did they explain why it took eight weeks? 😳

@CrispsnDips no, just they were busy.

I think some police forces are just quicker at responding/have less backlog. I got my most recent DBS turned around in one day (West Midlands) but when I used to have an address in Cumbria it always took weeks to go through. I saw an interesting spreadsheet on gov.uk a while ago listing average days of return for each police force and the differences were staggering.

CompleteBarstool · 26/06/2021 11:36

At work it tends to average about 4 weeks for new staff we've appointed so I'm shocked at anything less than 2 weeks!

Kirkyb96 · 17/09/2021 09:53

Anyone else recently applied for an Enhanced DBS ? How long does it take ?
I applied on august and it has been stuck at stage 4 for over 3 weeks now getting a bit frustrated

CrispsnDips · 17/09/2021 10:19

My Enhanced DBS took about five weeks - applied around the end of May this year and got it back at the beginning of July 😊

My daughter applied for hers 3/8 for a college course and hasn’t heard anything back yet. Means she can’t start placement yet. Any idea on how to check progress?

Kirkyb96 · 26/09/2021 16:18

There may be an issue I was waiting 4 weeks and went to the council and they said DBS shelved it with out informing anyone because there was a fault with the name or something

Doorhandleghost · 26/09/2021 17:52

I had one recently it took a bit less than 2 weeks. I’ve never changed my name and lived in the same area all my life so very easy. Friend of mine who has moved around a lot and changed names 3 times has been waiting for over a month now.

RidingMyBike · 26/09/2021 18:21

I applied for two within weeks of each other - one enhanced for volunteering that was back within about ten days of the organisation taking the photos of my ID. One standard one for new job that has taken eight weeks and still isn't done.

Chewbacca80 · 07/10/2021 15:23

I've being waiting over a month now. The Church of England, carry out their own checks. Despite me having my DBS, on the update system its stuck at Stage 4. I've had to go out and get another job which luckily they've used my existing DBS, and started my within 3 days. Confused

Aprilx · 07/10/2021 17:32

I applied for a basic one on the 27th September and it took 9 days.

murasaki · 10/10/2021 00:01

About a week, I submitted one for a colleague on the 29th and it came back (at least i could see the certificate number, he hasn't got the paper version, but that's all we needed for the research project) on the 6th.

murasaki · 10/10/2021 00:02

I would also recommend signing up to the update service (13 quid or so per year) which makes it portable so it sticks to you not the institution.

This thread is really making me worry. I have finished my notice period but still in limbo. My new employer apparently only sent their part of the electronic form yesterday, and I'm desperate to start. I haven't moved jobs or houses in the last 5 years, so I really hope it's quick.

Nimblebim · 28/10/2021 19:38

I came to ask the same question.
I applied for an Enhanced DBS 3 weeks ago and its stuck at Stage 4.

Kirkyb96 · 28/10/2021 19:51

Deffo ring DBS and even ask to speak with a manager they are great

WhoWants2Know · 29/10/2021 15:43

I finally got a tracking number through and I can see that it's on Stage 5, being printed. Hopefully it will be here soon.
