Words of advice please!

I have an interview for band 7 mental health nurse job tomorrow, it's a management position and I'm currently a 6 so no experience with this level of interview before. I'm returning from may leave so feel rusty too which doesn't help.

Any nurses (or anyone who has advice) please send me words of wisdom or ideas as to what the questions could be. I'm expecting lots of values based questions and leadership skills questions obviously, anyone else been in this position who can give me specifics?

I’m not a nurse, so take with pinch of salt…

• managing safeguarding or risk question
• MDT working (challenges and how overcome)
• policy (related to area you’re working in) / awareness of NICE guidelines
• managing teams or supervising staff - again challenges / approaches
• possibly clinical governance - recording info etc
• capacity or mental health act stuff

And the good old - what can you bring to the position / why you’d be good for the position

Any chance you can do a practice interview with a friend or family member? I’ve done lots of interviews and that’s my top tip. Even ‘why do you want this job’ can be good to have explained out loud before.

Look up ‘STAR’ interview response structures.

Non-clinical 8a here.

Ive recently interviewed for a B7 (A&E) some of the questions I was asked were:
-How I had been involved in change management/what had I done/which methodology did I use
-Resilience (own and team)
-Quality assurance/how we measure quality
-Service improvement/what is the organisation doing
-Question on which trust value means the most to me/or which is most difficult to implement
-Qualities I posses which will make me a good leader
-Budget question

Something that went well that you are proud of

Something that went badly that you learnt from (practice a clinical one, and a supervision of others and a management issue).
Work up plenty of examples that let you talk about your skills and practice saying it all out loud over and over so you are fluent (I do this and I am frequently told I interview extremely well).

Know your key legislation and trust values stuff.

Iv done some practice interview stuff and know have some examples of things which have gone well/not so well.

I don't know much about budgets etc as this will be my first management position so that's perhaps where my weaknesses lie. I won't have everything they want, but hoping I have enough skills for me to do well and hopefully get the job. I think leadership is my strength so going to focus on that where I can.

I'm totally fine with it if I don't, if I'm not competent to I don't want it.

All good advice given ... I'm a Band 8b and have interviewed a lot of nurses over the years
I promise you they have you the job because they liked you ! Not just the pre prepared answers you may have researched
You can teach someone most skills but you can never teach attitude personality or commitment

Thank you @66babe, that's really reassuring as my mind has been doing silly things like telling me that I won't be able to do it etc. But I did feel the interview went well and I was able to answer confidently.

Congratulations on your new post! You must feel great! I've got an interview next week for a Band 7 job in the NHS. I was wondering if you remember what questions they asked and if you'd mind sharing as I'm soooo nervous already.

Sure @TootyFrooty8 I'll remember what I can. Mine were valued based then competency based. The values based will be different because ours is based on our trust values which will differ from yours (assuming you're within a different trust!) But values were mainly about working together, how you communicate with colleagues etc. Also I'm mental health so depending on your field your question may differ on that too.

Competency was -
Something like 'how would you recruit a team of people using the nice guidelines and any other relevant policies?'
One about how I would deal with complaints.
There was also a question about leadership but can't remember how it was worded, something about how I supported a colleague.
One about service improvement and whether I've been involved in this before.
There was also a question about giving an example of when I raised a clinical concern, what did I do, what was the outcome.

Can you advise on some interview questions? I know this was a while ago but I have a mental health B7 management interview coming up :)

I'm a band 6 nurse and have managerial responsibility as well as holding SPQ.

Look at trust values and current issues but also remember at lot of NHS interviews are points based and the questions tend to be scenario based
