Hello
I have began the very early stages of starting my own business, and when it does start I imagine it'll be on a part time basis for the first year, therefore will likely be wanting to work elsewhere too.
I am joining a company as an associate/ contractor, the company has similarities, the customers are the same, however the service fulfils a slightly purpose, so there wont be a direct over lap however they both fall into the same service bracket.
For example, say one company does assessments and support for autism at school, the other does ADHD. - (This isnt what either companies do just trying to think of an example).
However the sales pitches used for both the language would be very similar, and it would hard to avoid anything that looks like its 'copying'.
I've had three bits of advice.
1.) Be honest from onset, it could go two ways, they reject you, or they possibly consider some form of collaboration as the services could compliment each other (unlikely but an option)
2.) If nothing is explicitly outlined in contractor agreement just stay quiet, work on both and then leave when yours is up and running.
3.) Dont risk any accusations of plagiarism or copying, and accept a reduced income while you work on your business.
Opinions?
:)
