panicking about DBS

I'm having a 'mare! My DBS certificates are on the update service and now it is asking me to renew my subscription. I've never paid before - I think the first one must have been a voluntary position and any I've subsequently added I'm sure it hasn't asked if it is voluntary or not. Anyway, if I don't renew it looks like I may not be able to work (I'm a supply teacher) and it seems I have to apply for a whole new DBS check. Is this right? How have I managed never to pay for the update service up until now. The helpline is closed for the day and I am freaking out. Anyone got any wise words?!

Can't you check with your agency in the morning?

joystir59 · 01/06/2021 20:41

Just login to the update service and pay- it's £13 a year! If your DBS expires you will have a mare sorting it out.

Loshad · 01/06/2021 20:42

Why don’t you just pay for it ( assuming that won’t cause you massive financial hardship) it’s £18 for the year I think so much less than losing a days pay.

I've never paid for the update and my work one is from a dbs I had in 2014 as a volunteer? I've never heard of this ?

HunterHearstHelmsley · 01/06/2021 20:46

Can you afford to pay the fee?

Your DBS is like an MOT, pretty much only valid on the date of issue. However there isn't an expiry date as such. Most employers update every 3 years or so. The update service just means you pay an annual fee and your employer can check online.

I don't use it personally but it's probably useful for those who change employment often (temps, Bank staff, supply teachers, etc)

I was issued a new bank card and they didn't recognise it. I just put in my new details and it was sorted.

Yes I can afford to pay the fee but you can't just pay the fee. You have to apply for a new DBS which will take, I don't know, a month to arrive. In the meantime I guess i can't work! Which I can't afford. I'm a supply teacher.

I can ring DBS in the morning but until then I will, because that's what I'm like, be panicking. I can't do a thing about it until 8am when I ring!

I don't understand. You say you are already on the update service and its asking you to pay to renew the subscription. Why can you not do that?
Why do you then say you need a whole new one? Who is asking you for this? The agency you work for?

Suzi888 · 02/03/2022 22:12

No it won’t take a month, should be done in a week or so. Ours were emailed to us with the certificate arriving later.

Hbh17 · 02/03/2022 22:18

The whole point of the Update Service is so that you don't have to get a new DBS certificate. Just ask your employer/agency to run an update check for you.
