What’s it like to work at the MOJ (Civil Service)?

Hi all,

Just found out I’ve been offered a job at the MOJ (policy/operations role at HEO level). I currently work in operations in another fairly bit govt department, so it’s a little bit different - but still similar - to my current role.

I’m wondering if anyone can give me some insight into what it’s like to work at MOJ? From what I’ve heard, it seems like a very friendly and inclusive department, which is positive!

Thanks!

Not been directly employed by moj but by experiences of them are some of my most positive in my career. Downsides were the lifers with bloated salaries and egos, over reliance of admin (so much for everything) but if you already work in government you'll be familiar with that already :)

Great news TaraR!! Thanks :)

If you wouldn’t mind going into a bit more detail, could I ask what made your experience there so positive?

Sorry, what made your experience ‘of them’ so positive, even!

I just remember it being a largely cheerful and cooperative team, we had a laugh and went out for drinks...Not saying there wasn't the odd person who was a nightmare or odd lol But overall have happy memories of it. Still close to a couple of friends I made on that account and some of my favourite colleagues to work with were also from that time.

Will you be working in HQ in London? Best views ever. And yes - like most gov depts the vast majority of people working at MoJ are friendly, collegiate, supportive etc etc. Quite a weird mixture of the courts lot, including judges and QCs etc and the prisons side but everyone cracks on with it.

Thanks Tara and frisky!! Yep I’ll be at the Petty France building in London :)

It's a great location. Right on the park and next to the tube. Near shops and mainline at Victoria. Brilliant market with food stalls etc assuming they come back after covid.

MoJ itself full of straightforwardly nice people. Decent department. Not dysfunctional or up itself. Solid performer!Grin

Hi OP (sorry to resurrect a thread!)
am looking at applying to MOJ but it looks like the staff turnover is huge (small dept) - would you recommend MOJ?
