Is this normal re references? I’ve got a job via an agency and they take references anyway they are asking my previous employers my salary? I was surprised by this. Plus what am I good at and not good and a list I’d questions to rate me on...just surprised they can do this or maybe it’s normal... thanks x

They can ask, many referees don't give a full answer, only responding to confirm dates of employment.

In my industry it's common to have the previous employer confirm salary, but we're on a national pay scale so it's just to confirm the point on the scale.

I saw the form as one of my referees showed me it’s v detailed and they expect all questions to be answered! Seems obtrusive and I don’t think it’s their business what I earned in my previous roles...

I have seen and filled out these forms. I
Firstly, you are not really allowed to give a bad reference.
Secondly, nobody has time to go into details about an ex employee...
All we ever responded to was dates of employment and job title.

You are allowed to give a bad reference if it's justified!

The reference I got was outstanding my point it is them asking salary etc ...don’t think it’s relevant and surprised it’s allowed...

We received a very detailed reference form from a public organisation with questions regarding performance etc - we were ask to rate each category from poor to outstanding. We chose not to fill it in and to provide a reference on our own terms. You have asked someone to provide a reference - you have given permission to share your personal info.
It's all a pile of crap anyway - if we had a poorly performing employee we'd be glad to get rid of them - their reference would be as close to glowing as we could get away with. We do not trust references.

I had left a while ago so they weren’t trying to get rid of me Grin
