Hi all, quick question.... I'm a teacher, due date is 19th Jan, if I wanted to return to work September 2005 but on a part time (mornings only) basis, when do i have to tell my headteacher?

I personally would do it asap, and try and get it sorted out. I found that it was easier to be open from the start as it gave more time for planning on both sides. Good luck

I am not sure legally when you have to tell them though.

agree with hulababy - the more time they know, the better able they can juggle the timetable about. check with your union. And good luck! I went back part time after my first as well. Enjoy the rest of your pregnancy!

Hi, I had similar dates to you last year. I gave up at the end of Christmas term although my official date was the beginning of January term. I then went back in July for 2 weeks full time and then went part time as from September. This meant I got full pay over the holidays (my DP took 2 weeks off work).
I discussed with my head before I went off and again just before I had to give my notice back. You could also ring personal at the LEA and get them to send you the info regarding part time. Before my brain went too rusty, I wrote all the 'notification dates' on the calendar so I didn't miss the deadline.

personally, I'd leave it until you've had the baby, as you don't know until you have it how you're going to feel about going back to work. If you're thinking of going back in sept, there's still plenty of time before they start doing the timetable - most schools do it in the summer term as this is when they have a good idea of which staff are leaving / joining etc.

It would be awful if you go in and given them your proposed days / hours and then you change your mind in any way after you've have the baby and been at home with it for a while. It wouldn't be too late to change things but school might be a bit peed off with you. You don't actually officially have to tell them until just before, but it's more polite and will give you more of a chance to get what you want if you tell them as much in advance as you can... but Feb or March should be fine.
