Part time working?

Do you work part time?

Do your colleagues voice an opinion about it?

Yes. 15 hours over 3 days.

No. Not to me. I’ve heard colleagues moan about other part-timers in the past so they probably do moan about me.

I do 24hrs and cover out of hours. I doubt my colleagues talk about it, and certainly don’t say anything to me, as my job means they don’t have to do unsociable hours!

When I went back to 4 days a week after mat leave my boss, every Thursday wished me a 'lovely nice long weekend' so yeah she seemed to have an opinion! I resisted the urge to comment on her 'lovely full time wage' every pay day. I did however often point out that I found work less tiring than being home with a baby.

I work half time, I've done so for years. I've never heard colleagues say anything about it. But I'm in a different time zone to them and work odd hours ... quite a few probably wouldn't know I was part time if I didn't mention it now and again.

We only talk about it in terms of logistics, really- "A's not in on Wednesdays, so you need to move that meeting," and that sort of thing.

BackforGood · 22/04/2021 00:46

Yes, I've worked PT for years.
Never had any negativity around it, just some jealousy. Smile

As pp said, occasionally it comes up in terms of logistics about when I need to meet someone.

Until 18 months ago I worked 3 days a week, I now do 4 days.

My boss does compressed hours and is not in on Fridays, she dovetsils with her deputy who is not in on Mondays. We have many people in job shares, compressed hours, 9 day fortnights, term time only etc etc, this includes people in very senior roles.

Thanks everyone

I work 3 shortish days (within school hours). It's my choice and I'm happy with it, but it does annoy me when I'm leaving at the end of my 3 days - comments like part timer, lady of leisure (by someone who works 4 short days). If someone says they are tired - we do a fairly physical job - then I'm pulled down if I say I'm tired too.
I do as much paperwork as a full timer, just all pushed onto my 3 days - sometimes I take it home if I have to, I do try to avoid that.

I was just intrigued to see how others are spoken about in part time work, to see whether I'm in the minority!

Well, that's just conversation.
I just reply "Yeah, it's great, you should try it.... have a great weekend everyone" and waltz out.
