References before interview

I applied for a job a month ago, just to see what would happen. I've received an invite for interview, but on reflection I'm not sure I'm interested in proceeding now so I may withdraw application.

But what I'm worried about is they asked for reference details for my current employer on the application form. I put my current employer down, and I'm worried they have contacted prior to interview (as some do these days)

That will cause issues and awkwardness at my current job, especially at a time when things are pretty unstable. One of the reasons I applied for the role is due to job insecurity so this could make it worse. Is it likely they will contact prior to interview?

It’s not usual for an employer to take up references before making an offer - usually it’s interview, conditional offer, referencing/other pre employment checks, unconditional offer.

In some professions it happens as standard though - teaching I think?? What is the job you applied for?

The only way you’d know for sure is to ask them - I think as you have been invited to interview it would be perfectly reasonable for you to do so.

I hope not. I have an interview this coming week. They usually ask if referees can be contacted prior to the interview. In which case I tick ‘no’ for work boss and ‘yes’ for more personal ones (co-workers at same level), I can do it in my line of work).
