Imposter syndrome over a job title!

Hiya, please talk me round!

I've seen a perfect job, the hours I want (although it will probably end up considerably more!), closer to home that I currently work, and I meet all of the essential (one a little tenuously!) and all but one of the desirable requirements.

However, the job title is making me nervous! It's CEO, and CEO's are always all knowing, eloquent, impressive people! It's stupid, but if it were the same JD but called Top Manager of the Organisation I'd apply like a shot!

Talk some sense into me please...

The only way to absolutely guarantee that you don't get the job is to not apply. This is one of those times to 'feel the fear and did it anyway '

Good luck.

Focus your application on the job spec and forget the job title. If you can evidence you’re a good candidate to meet the job spec then you’re capable of doing the job and if picked after interview, they are demonstrating they think that too. Good luck!

Apply! Are you female do you mind me asking? Because there was a study that showed women only apply for jobs where they meet 100‰ of the criteria, but men will apply when they meet just 60‰. It sounds like you meet all the criteria so go for it!

Oblomov21 · 03/04/2021 18:40

No man would quibble for a second about applying.

partyatthepalace · 03/04/2021 18:44

Apply! - if it makes you feel any better I know many unimpressive CEOs - so you will deffo be better than them

You know all the stats - men apply when they are 40% qualified, women only when they are overqualified - don’t be a stat!

Imagine you writing the application for your best mate, and sell yourself like buggery.

LaMainDeFatima · 03/04/2021 18:46

DO it. You have nothing to lose.

hotcrossbunn · 03/04/2021 19:04

Thank you all, you're right, if it were my daughter considering applying I'd be saying go for it!

Yes Ducks I'm female... as you rightly suggest I'm sure if I were male I wouldn't hesitate..

Then definitely apply. Don't let some crap man who's only 60% as good as you get the job Wink

CarlottaValdez · 04/04/2021 08:07

I had a similar crisis over becoming General Counsel! Definitely go for it!

ClashCityRocker · 04/04/2021 08:53

Apply! What's in a name anyway?

I have a friend who describes herself as a CEO. She sells some class of makeup.

Newestname001 · 04/04/2021 15:53

What they all said, @hotcrossbunn

And remember, CEOs don't do absolutely everything themselves - they have/should have good direct reports to help steer the business properly.

Also, even the very best CEOs (whether Male or Female) put their pants on one leg at a time...

Good luck! 🌹

hotcrossbunn · 04/04/2021 16:13

Thank you all! I'm going to go for it Grin

Hurrah!

Just make sure you do all the necessary prep - which will also keep you calm throughout the process. Their website (particularly the corporate structure) and annual reports are good places to start, plus also look at them in relation their competitors.

Remember the interview structure is a two-way street - and don't under-price yourself which, I understand, tends to be a female trait. Your research will give you a good idea of the total remuneration package - not just salary - but don't be afraid to ask and/or tell them what you actually want.

Negotiation is part of the skill set, so know your own value, financially, intellectually, etc. 🌹

Magnificentmug12 · 04/04/2021 16:29

Didn’t know that about males going for it at only 60%- I apply when it’s around 95%!

That’s a shocking statistic...feel a little robbed I never knew this in my younger years!

MirandaWestsNewBFF · 04/04/2021 20:21

Definitely go for it! Good luck!

79andnotout · 06/04/2021 11:17

My CEO is completely incompetent! Good luck.
