Toxic boss - to quit after maternity?

I have come to the end of my tether with my boss.

He has issues with everyone, tries to squeeze pennies out of anyone he deals with while sitting on millions, he treats everyone like shit, comments on personal things such as lunch, appearance etc, has no concept of time (he will wait until the end of the day to do the urgent task I’ve been reminding him off all day and guilt trip me into staying late to finish/help him out), he treats all the employees unequally (he has six staff, one is his child who is useless and makes many mistakes - usually serious - but the rest of us get the brunt of it and have to pick up the slack!), he bullies whoever he can get away with, swears, screams and shouts at us, he blows up at the tiniest mistake/misunderstanding, he will implement a procedure one day and the next day he will have a go at us saying it’s wrong and it should be this way and tell you he said something entirely differently, he has this big thing of taking responsibility if something goes wrong/a mistake is made but 99% of the time he is in the wrong because he is so scatty and controlling but he doesn’t hold himself to the same responsibility, he even tells us off in front whoever is around (clients/the postman etc), he has pissed of so many clients with his inaction or attitude (and then blames us) and then we have to try and make up and get back on their good side, he doesn’t like the staff to talk and if we do he wants us to speak to each other ‘professionally’ and I’m pretty sure he has us all wfh and claiming furlough.

I’ve probably missed out loads but this is so long already.

I have worked in this office job for nearly 14 years. I stayed so long because usually I am pretty thick skinned and I can ‘handle’ the boss and don’t let him get to me, the pay is over minimum wage (£11p/h) and I can pretty much take my annual leave whenever I like because we have so few employees. But I’ve had enough now, today we’ve had a 20 minute shouting match over an error that I did not make. I’m pregnant and I’m upset with myself for going down to his level, I actually cried after. I go on maternity in a couple of months, would I be stupid for putting my notice in after my leave?

I had a toxic boss and quit after maternity. Just couldn't be arsed to go back to it. Struggled financially and struggled to get another job after having a 'break'. Try and return for the security if you feel you can, then look for something else. Don't put yourself in a tough situation because your boss is an idiot.

I'm surprised you have hung around for so long. Always better to have a job to go to - depends on what your plans are doesn't it?
