Should I apply for this role?

I hope someone can offer some advice. I work for a good employer overall, but a piss-taking boss. I’m constantly pulled in to cover and it’s wearing me down. Changes are coming up over the summer and there’s a lot more work for me to do but very little in the way of reward. I’ve pushed for a pay uplift but this amounts to a couple of grand at most.

In the meantime, the contract for a service our dept manages has been awarded to someone new. They’re now recruiting for a similar role to mine, but from the opposite side, so to speak. There has been a lot of talk about the old company:new company not poaching each other’s staff, TU stuff, notice periods and legalities. It doesn’t appear to have crossed anyone’s mind that I might go for this role. It’s paid almost double what I earn! And I’m certain I could do it.

Cons are if I don’t get the role, I’ll still end up managing the contract with the new company and it could be awkward (small industry). Also, I’ll have to tell my boss somehow and it will be cringe-makingly awkward as most of our work over the next few weeks is likely to be with the person who would interview me. There’s also an issue around confidentiality as the new company will likely discuss applicants for this role with my boss (and me!). Any ideas?

You're over-thinking it, OP (said kindly).

Just apply for the role if you think you can do it.

Worry about the other stuff (if you have to) later.

I would apply, no reason to tell your boss unless you are successful surely?

Go for it. I'm sure it won't be the first time they've interviewed someone they know if it's a small industry. No need to be embarrassed or apologetic. Bet you'd be great in the role

someone advised me "You always apply". You can decide later if you actually want the job but default is that if you were looking & are tempted -- then just apply.

I think I get it. Nothing ventured nothing gained, all that.

Yes you should definitely apply
