Part-time and Bank Holidays

I’m new to working p/t. My employer gives us 8 public holidays or assigned days in lieu paid by reference to our Basic Salary. Can anyone help explain how working p/t would affect holiday days in these scenarios?

If my non-working day was a Wednesday during a BH Mon week.

If my non-working day was a Monday.

You should get the proportionate hours as an allowance.

If a bank holiday falls on your working day you use some of those hours to not work. Depending on which days you work/don’t work you could end up with more/less hours than needed.

So if you don’t work Monday and there’s a BHM, you don’t do anything. If there’s a BH on a Friday which falls on a working day you need to cover it with your allowance (and possibly some normal holiday hours).

Whatever % of fte you work, you get that % of 8 bank holidays.

I get the bank holidays pro-Rata. Say I work 4 days per week and there are 10 bank holiday, I get 80% of the 10 bank hols, so 8 days, less the number of bank hols that fall on my normal working days. This can be positive or negative, and my annual leave is adjusted by this amount. In this example, if 6 bank hols fell on my working day, I would get 2 extra days annual leave. If all 10 fell on my working days, I would get 2 days annual leave taken off me.

It doesn’t. It’s part of employment law.

So assuming you were working a 7.5hr 5-day week - then 8 BH equates to 60hrs.

If your new working pattern is 4 x 7.5hrs then you are only entitled to 4/5 or BH hours - ie 48hrs or only 6.4 days

Therefore If Monday is one of your working days you will not have enough BH entitlement to cover all 8 days so will need to use some of your holidays if you want to take them all off.

If you don't work a Monday you will be able to add those 6.4 days into your main holiday entitlement and will only have to use them for Good Friday and any Christmas/NY BH that May fall on any of your usual working days. The remainder you. Abuse whenever suits you

IMO it is always better not to work a Monday if going part-time.

I work part time, 18.5 hours which is half of our FT roles. My holidays are calculated in hours and I get 4 days worth of bank holiday hours added to my allowance (half the full time allowance).

I work Mondays so have to use them to book the bank holidays off. On Good Friday/if Christmas falls on My non working days I don’t need to do anything.

Mine are pro-rata. I work 4 days a week, Monday-Thursday. I get 80% of the years total bank holiday hours added to my total annual leave hours.

I get the same amount of total annual leave hours, however because I work on Monday's I have less flexibility over when I use those hours. So if a bank holiday is on a Monday I have to use my leave to cover it. If the bank holiday was on a Friday I could choose to use that leave on a different day. But overall it doesn't affect how much I have in total.

If your non working day is a Monday, you look at your holiday year, and work out how many non-Monday bank holidays there are. This varies, because Good Friday is always a Friday, Easter Monday, both May day bank holidays and the August one are Mondays, and Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Years Day could be any.

You are entitled to 4/5ths of 8 days - so 6.4 days.

Say all of the variable holidays were not Mondays. You would 'receive' 4 days in the ordinary course of events. You should have 2.5 days given as extra annual leave.

If your non working days was a Wednesday, it is possible all the holidays would fall on non-Wednesdays. In that case you would have 'received' 8 days - and should get 1.5 deducted from your annual leave.

It will be prorated

So if your holiday allowance (FT) is say 25 plus 8 bank hols and you work 4 days, you will get 80% of 33 days (26.5 days)

If you would normally work on a Monday and the company close on BHM then out of your allowance they will allocate at least 4 to those Mondays. Depending on when Christmas and new year falls you may end up needing to use some of your annual allowance, conversely, other years you may have a little credit .

If you don't work on Monday but you work 4 days per week, you are still entitled to 80% of the bank hols so you would use them as part of your normal holiday allowance

IMO it is always better not to work a Monday if going part-time.

Not all BHs are on Mondays. 2 at Xmas move, so does new year and Good Friday is always on a Friday.

I used to work Wednesday, Thursday and Fridays. My colleague worked Mondays and Tuesdays. I never got any extra holiday because of it, even though my colleague ended up with more holiday than I. I made several comments throughout the years, but nothing changed.

I work 4 days and don’t work Fridays. My contract states all bank holidays are paid so any BH that fall on a Friday I get as additional leave - this year I will only get one additional days leave for Good Friday.
It depends on your contract and the hours you work.
In my previous role our bank holidays formed part of our overall annual leave & we would need to work them other than Christmas Day which was excluded so I didn’t get extra hours as leave over the year.
