Starting a second temp job on maternity leave

I'm looking at applying for census work for a period of six weeks in the last three months of my maternity leave. Is my understanding correct that this is OK to do, in terms of not needing permission from my current employer?

I gather that if I do this during my period of receiving SMP, that I need to tell them so they can stop the SMP as it would be replaced with my earnings from the second job. But if I'm in the last unpaid 13 weeks, can I just crack on?

You need your employers agreement as you continue to be employed by them. But there is no real reason to disagree.
