I work in retail and I was due to return to my job after sick leave next month, my manager informed me today that there is no available job for me anymore and that I will need to be transferred to another store 2 miles away. Can they do this?

What does your contract say?

I would think they have built some flexibility into the contract considering the nature of the business. This will be purely down to your contract as PP mentioned.

Can they do this?

As others have said, it may be that your contract stipulates you must work across multiple sites, though even then there are limitations to that. If not then the short answer is no, they can't just impose a change without a good reason and a process.

How long have you been on sick leave?
How long have you worked for your employer?
Have you had to work in other locations before?
Is your post being made redundant, if so presumably this transfer is being offered as part of that process?

If you are in a union call them. If not contact ACAS and/or CAB for specific advice.
