Help! He's invading my personal space!

Need some advice here, want a tactful way to deal with one of my staff.
He has this habit of standing very close to me when he is talking to me, and I feel very uncomfortable with it. I spoke with another staff member who says he is doing the same thing to her.
I don't think he is doing it consciously, but when he steps up to me I am forced to take a step back, so he ends up moving close to me again, and we end up doing some comical two-step.
Not sure if this a cultural thing (he is from the Czech republic), but want to broach it with him in a non-judgemental and friendly manner as he does make me and other female (and maybe male, not sure haven't asked) to give us some space! He's a really nice guy otherwise, which is why I don't think he realises what he is doing!
TIA

Tricky. I don't know how you'd broach this without offending him. Would it might be better coming from another man rather than you ...phrased as a friendly word of advice along the lines of 'women don't tend to like this'.Something like that?

tell him to step back becuase your eyes go fuzzy when people are too close and you go cockeyed and look like a chicken

make a joke of it and just come out with it. i had to the other day but the guy i work with is just a perv! at least your guy is jsut unaware of it. if yu say it is nothign personnal i ma sure he will understand. also say it when it is just you two as i am sure he does not want to be embarrassed in front of other people.

Hi thanks for your comments, I am his line manager, so it ought to come from me and I certainly wouldn't say anything in front of other people!
LOL at Custardo, I like that suggestion!
bethoo - no he definitely isn't a perv, I homestly don't think he is aware of it.
I'll just have a friendly chat with him about later.
Thanks again
