Which job option?

Hello. I'd like some advice please. I have 2 job offers and am torn between them.

Option 1: NHS band 8a £45,753, 29 days holiday + bank holidays, great pension, commute 1hr each way. Lots of varied clinical work under high pressure

Option 2: Private company, salary £51,00 plus discretionary bonus, 25 days holiday + bank holidays, pension 3% employer conts, commute 30 minutes. Not much clinical variation and quite an easy job but chance to progress to managerial position.

My head says option 2 but my heart says option 1. WWYD?

It depends on whether you want to progress in your career, surely? If you do, then job 2. If you just enjoy the work then option 1.

Is your heart being realistic that Job1 is that much more rewarding without being exhausting?

Bemoreme21 · 09/02/2021 19:42

@lljkk I think i have romanticised views of the NHS and making a meaningful change to people's lives! I think I would definitely be more exhausted there as they expect a lot more from you. I suppose i feel like i'll become dumber in job 2 as i won't be learning as much while i'm there. Obviously the higher salary and smaller commute are a draw though.

I would stay away from private companies . People tried to warn me and I didn't listen. I'm now 3 years into a dead end clinical role ( I jumped ship from nhs as initially the money was better) however they don't follow agenda for change so my money hasn't really gone up . They are dodgy , always run on minimum staff. Feel like your PIN number is on the line. Unpleasant, I too am guilty of romanticising the nhs too Blush

@ginnyyu I am worried about this. Are you able to go back to the NHS now?

Yes I have just been offered a nurse specialist role within the nhs :) ( although I have just found out I am pregnant ) so it's all a little up in the air what I will do now .

@ginnyyu That's good news and congrats on the pregnancy! Can I ask which private company you went to work for?
